Doctoral Studies
The College plans to launch a doctoral programme in the future but meanwhile we are launching a programme that we hope will help those who are testing whether or not doctoral studies is the right course of action and those who are committed to a doctorate but would benefit from some supervised reading to identify a topic. We are calling this preparatory programme 'Reading with a View'.Reading with a View
The prospect of higher level study and research requires careful consideration. Clergy absorbed in busy ministries may be unsure of their capacity for further study intellectually or practically, and often benefit from a period of preparation before committing to a major programme of postgraduate work. For someone contemplating a particular field of research, especially at doctoral level, a period of exploratory study and conceptual clarification can be a great advantage in preparing for a worthwhile research proposal.
Supported Reading:
'Reading with a View' is designed to enable a one year period of supported reading for people considering whether and how to embark on doctoral studies. With the help of personal academic supervision and the full resources of the college library, students will undertake a progressive programme of reading focused on a broad area of interest and potential research.
Structured Progress:
'Reading with a View' will enable students to build up the skills and disciplines of higher level study in a structured way. Regular contact with a personal supervisor, together with peer group presentations of work in progress and feedback on written work, should enable participants to judge the level of their work and its readiness for further development. Advice will be given about current opportunities for doctoral study and, by the end of the programme, students will be encouraged to develop a full research proposal for critical review.
One Year Programme:
Students may enrol for 'Readng with a View' at any time to commence a three term period of study.
Induction - allocation of supervisor and induction into the reading programme, library and research facilities;
Term 1 - preparing two 750 word book reviews; supervision meeting; and attendance at a work in progress seminar;
Term 2 - preparing a 2,000 word annotated bibliography; supervision meeting; and attendance at a work in progress seminar;
Term 3 - preparing a 3,000 word literature review and/or research proposal; supervision meeting; presentation at a work in progress seminar; formal advice session on progression to doctoral study.
How to Apply:
Applications are welcome from clergy and church workers who have the support of their diocese (or equivalent) and can demonstrate relevant prior academic learning. A Masters degree or strong first degree in Theology will normally be required.
The programme fee, including supervision costs for the year, is £400.
The next Introductory Day for the 'Reading with a View' course is Friday, 26th February 2010.
