The Society for the Study of Anglicanism
The Society for the Study of Anglicanism was inaugurated in 2003. It is convened and co-chaired by the Revd Canon Professor Martyn Percy and the Revd Dr Rob Slocum from the USA. The Society exists to promote research into Anglicanism. Areas of interest currently include:
- its contemporary situation as a Church
- its character, nature and ethos
- its theology, doctrinal and ethical progessions
- its ecclesiology - local, regional, national, international, etc
- its identity as a Communion - 'post-colonial', etc
- its history - as a church, Communion, etc
- its worship - liturgical studies, congregational studies, etc
- its missiology - past and present, etc
- its hymnody - in a variety of cultures
- its spirituality - historic, contemporary, etc
- its aesthetics - buildings, art, etc
- its role within public life - 'established', international, contributions to ethics and political debates, etc
Membership of the Society is open to scholars from any appropriate discipline, and from any country, with an interest in studying the Anglican Church. The Society is a 'research-led' body that is committed to excellence in promoting the study of the Anglican Church. It welcomes members and contributions from a variety of disciplinary fields (i.e., theology, history, sociology, anthropology, missiology, etc), including inter-disciplinary and multidisciplinary approaches.
The Society meets each year immediately prior to the American Academy of Religion's Annual Meeting, and on other occasions. The Society keeps a database of members and makes contact through newsletters (via e-mail).
