Biblical and Theological Studies Summer School 2017

The Root of All Evil? The Place of Money in Society

Sunday 9th to Saturday 15th July 2017

We live in a time when the gap between rich and poor in society is greater than it has been for generations, and a great imbalance in wealth also exists between nations. Recent years have seen scandals in the financial industry, bank bail-outs, and an increasing awareness of tax avoidance and tax evasion both by individuals and corporations. Our relationship with money has spiritual, as well as personal and societal, implications. It is vital that we, as Christians, develop an adequate theology of money, wealth creation and resource distribution. Join us in July 2017 for our next Biblical and Theological Studies Summer School which will address these issues.

Speakers:

Revd Dr Sam Wells: Vicar of St Martin in the Fields, London. As well as being a professor of Christian ethics, Dr Well’s has substantial experience of ministry in urban priority areas, and St Martin in the Fields is well-known for its support of the homeless and those at risk of homelessness.

Sir Hector Sants: With many years’ experience in investment banking, from 2007 to 2012 Sir Hector was CEO of the UK’s Financial Services Authority. In 2014, he became chairman of the Archbishop of Canterbury’s task group on credit unions and the financial sector. He also chairs the board of trustees of StepChange, a Debt advice charity.

A range of other speakers, drawn from the staff of Ripon College Cuddesdon and from outside the College community, will also bring their expertise and insight on the subject. A trip to London will be included in the summer school programme.
