Date of the annual R O Hall Lecture announced

The R O Hall Lecture will be given this year by The Very Reverend Matthias Der, Dean, HKSKH St John's Cathedral, Hong Kong, on Thursday, 9th November 2017 at 7pm

The Very Reverend Matthias Tze Wo Der was born and raised in Hong Kong and Taiwan and educated in the United States and Canada, where he lived for 31 years. During this time he acquired a wide-range of experience in different cultures, languages and ministerial settings.

After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto, (majoring in Sociology), Dean Matthias furthered his studies at Wycliffe College, Toronto and graduated with a Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1990 in the Diocese of Toronto, Anglican Church of Canada, and to the priesthood the following year. 

After serving his curacy, for two decades Matthias served as incumbent of St Christopher’s Anglican Church in Toronto. During his tenure, St Christopher’s grew from a humble church plant to a vibrant parish operating from two locations.  He also served on numerous diocesan committees, sat on the Board of Trustees of a seminary, and was elected to the Provincial Synod of Ontario and the General Synod of Canada.  He was made an Honorary Canon of St James’ Cathedral, Toronto in 2007. 

Matthias was appointed Dean of St John’s Cathedral, Hong Kong in July 2012 and officially installed later that year on 13th October. 

Matthias is passionate about sharing the gospel, nurturing disciples, and making the Christian faith relevant to people’s lives. To this end, key aspects of his ministry at  St John’s include strengthening congregational life, building up intentional discipleship, and guiding the cathedral’s outreach ministries to meet the needs of today’s society.

As well as his many cathedral duties, Matthias serves on the Diocese of Hong Kong Island’s Standing Committee, Committees on Constitutions & Canons and Liturgical Worship.  He is also a delegate to the General Synod of Hong Kong Sheng Kung Hui (The Anglican Church in Hong Kong) and sits on the Standing Committee, Church Policy Paper Steering Committee and Standing Commission on Education, the Director of Supervisors for student placement at Ming Hua Theological College, and a member of the Board of Governors of Matilda Hospital.

Dean Matthias is married to Rachel and has two adult daughters. He has a wide- range of personal interests including travelling, swimming and violin.
