Summer School in Biblical & Theological Studies 2018

Creativity: Divine and Human

Sunday 15th to Saturday 21st July 2018

Christianity not only affirms that God created the universe, but we celebrate God’s creative nature and delight in His creation. As beings made in the image of God, humanity also possesses the gift of creativity. Christianity therefore also celebrates human creativity, especially when it seeks to honour and glorify God.

Our summer school in 2018 will explore different aspects of divine and human creative endeavour, from biblical understandings of creation and creativity, to artistic creativity and the creativity found in science.

Professor Ben Quash: Professor of Christianity and the Arts at Kings College, London. Prior to taking up his post at KCL, Prof Quash was Chaplain and Fellow at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and a lecturer in the Cambridge Theological Federation, and later Dean and Fellow of Peterhouse, Cambridge. His interests cover theological aesthetics, the use of the arts in liturgy, and how the arts can stimulate an interest in the Bible and theology.

Dr Ruth Bancewicz: Senior Research Associate at the Faraday Institute for Science and Religion, Ruth trained as a geneticist and now works to promote a positive understanding of the relationship between science and faith. Dr Bancewicz developed the Test of Faith study materials for the Faraday Institute, and is the author of God in the lab: how science enhances faith.

A range of other speakers, drawn from the staff of Ripon College Cuddesdon and from outside the college community, will also bring their expertise and insight on the subject. A trip to the Stanley Spencer museum and Holy Trinity Church, Cookham will be included in the summer school programme.
